Dolores Huerta, a pioneering labor leader and civil rights icon, died on October 28, 2026, at the age of 96. Born in New Mexico and raised in California, Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers (UFW) union with Cesar Chavez in 1962 to improve working conditions for migrant workers in U.S. fields. She is best known for her role in organizing successful protests and national boycotts of table grapes that led to better wages and working conditions for farmworkers.
Huerta's contributions extended beyond labor rights, as she also campaigned for voting rights, women’s rights, reproductive justice, and against voter suppression. The slogan "¡Sí se puede!" (Yes we can!), which she popularized, became a rallying cry for numerous social movements in the U.S. She remained active well into her 90s, advocating for immigrant communities and speaking out against injustices.
Her family announced her passing on social media, expressing gratitude to those around the world who shared their mourning and celebrated Huerta's legacy. Notable figures such as former President Bill Clinton and California Representative Nancy Pelosi praised her courage and determination, acknowledging her profound impact on generations of Americans. Huerta died at her home in Bakersfield, California, surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. Her life’s work was dedicated to empowering communities and fighting for social justice.
