As of mid-October 2026, the U.S. military estimates that the ongoing war with Iran has cost at least $47.1 billion, according to CBS News. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reports that around $29 billion of this total is due to replacing expended munitions, while an additional $6.1 billion covers lost equipment and $11.9 billion includes incremental costs such as support for American service members. The estimate excludes the cost of damages to U.S. military bases in the Middle East, which were targeted by Iranian drones and missiles.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had previously estimated the war's cost at around $37.5 billion, excluding damage to U.S. facilities. The Congressional Budget Office predicts that costs could range from $2 billion to $3 billion per month for as long as the conflict continues, partly due to replacing interceptor missiles used to defend against Iranian attacks. This figure may increase during periods of heightened military exchanges between the two nations.
The war is set to enter its ninth month, with concerns about "strategic inventory shortfalls" leading the Defense Department to accelerate production of necessary supplies and equipment.
