As of October 28, 2026, a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., declined to indict Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to Mark Meadows and prominent witness before the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. The Justice Department had sought charges against her for allegedly lying during testimony about President Donald Trump's actions on that day but failed in its efforts. It is unclear if prosecutors will attempt another indictment. Hutchinson testified in June 2022 about events she claimed to have heard regarding the president's behavior and his reaction after being told he could not travel to the Capitol, making her one of the most significant witnesses during the investigation into Trump’s attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 election.
