The body of a missing California hiker was recovered on Mount Whitney on Sunday, five days after it was initially found. A blustery storm delayed retrieval operations until then. The Inyo County sheriff’s office reported the discovery and extended condolences to the family without identifying the victim. On October 19, a motel in Lone Pine contacted authorities about a missing guest who had expressed plans to hike Mount Whitney. The next day, the hiker's vehicle was found at the base of the mountain. A helicopter spotted the deceased on the Mountaineer’s Route but hazardous weather conditions prevented immediate recovery until Sunday when a search and rescue team hoisted the body from an elevation of about 13,600 ft. Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous United States, has seen numerous perilous incidents recently.
