As of October 26, 2026, Ben & Jerry’s co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield are exploring a deal to separate their brand from its current owner, The Magnum Ice Cream Company, according to the Wall Street Journal. The founders have been in discussions with Pete Stavros, founder of Expanding ESOPs, to restructure the business under an employee stock-ownership plan (ESOP). This would give employees ownership shares and offer tax benefits to the company. However, Magnum Ice Cream Company has stated that Ben & Jerry’s is not for sale and is currently thriving as part of their organization. Magnum argues that separating Ben & Jerry’s would lead to increased costs and decreased social mission investment. This move reflects a longstanding tension between the founders' commitment to social activism and the business operations under Magnum's ownership.
