The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, stated she is "deeply distressed" over reports that her estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr., 82, is under investigation in the Philippines for allegedly possessing child sexual abuse images. According to a report by The Sun, Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan's half-brother and son of Thomas Markle Sr., discovered what he described as hundreds or thousands of illegal images mixed with family mementos at his father’s home in Cebu, Philippines.
Thomas Markle Jr. reported the discovery to local authorities and contacted the FBI, which is also investigating. The elder Markle has denied the allegations but admitted to paying for sex in the Philippines. Police are examining a laptop found alongside the images, with full results expected within a week.
Meghan revealed that she had been aware of troubling allegations against her father since 2018 and was given assurances by UK authorities that these were being investigated. She maintains that distancing herself from her father was solely for protecting her children, Archie (7) and Lilibet (5). The Metropolitan Police is now reviewing its handling of the case and may refer it to a police watchdog if necessary.
The Philippine National Police plan to take "appropriate legal actions" against Thomas Markle Sr. if sufficient evidence is found supporting the allegations.
