On October 25, 40 Iranian sailors from US-sanctioned oil tankers anchored just outside Sri Lanka’s territorial waters sought urgent medical treatment on the island. The sailors were brought ashore through the port of Galle, located about 115km south of Colombo over the weekend. Sri Lanka’s foreign ministry confirmed that it had coordinated with the Iranian embassy to bring these sailors to shore for necessary care. In March, a US submarine sank an Iranian frigate, the IRIS Dena, in nearby international waters, resulting in the deaths of 104 sailors. Sri Lankan navy rescued 32 sailors from the sinking frigate, and another Iranian naval craft has sought safe harbor at Trincomalee in northeastern Sri Lanka.
