On October 17, 2026, Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported that two oil tankers caught fire after striking naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. Each tanker was carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil and attempting to pass through an unauthorized route, according to IRGC statements shared via Iranian state media. The incident occurred amidst ongoing tensions between Iran and Western powers since late February when Tehran seized control over the strait, which carries about one-fifth of global oil consumption.
By October 23, satellite images showed a significant oil spill spreading along UAE beaches near Umm Al Quwain, following the strikes on or around October 9. The slick had spread more than 35km by October 24, leading authorities in Ras Al Khaimah and other emirates to close all coastal areas until further notice for safety and environmental assessments. Authorities urged fishermen and sea users to avoid affected regions due to potential hazards. This spill highlights ongoing concerns over the environmental impact of naval conflicts in strategic waterways like the Strait of Hormuz.
