As of October 23, 2026, Gem No.2, an oil tanker damaged near the Strait of Hormuz between October 9-10, caused a significant oil spill affecting beaches around Umm Al Quwain in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). By Wednesday, satellite images showed the oil slick spreading over 35km (22 miles) from the tanker. The UAE authorities closed some coastal areas and beaches to contain the environmental impact. Prof Steve Widdicombe of Sharjah Marine Science Research Centre said an impact was inevitable but too early to assess its extent.
