Ross Greer, co-leader of the Scottish Greens, announced during his keynote speech at the party's conference that the Greens will introduce a 'millennial rail card' aimed at offering discounted rail fares to individuals aged 31-49. The initiative is part of broader efforts by the Greens on public transport reform, which include eliminating peak rail fares and implementing free bus travel for those under 22 years old. To fund this new scheme, the party plans to impose a frequent flyer levy on wealthy flyers who frequently use air travel, estimated to potentially raise around £50 million annually according to the Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC). This measure is designed not only to support public transport users but also to reduce carbon emissions from air travel, particularly for regular business flights within the UK which Greer claims contribute significantly to climate change. An exemption will be provided for lifeline flights serving Scotland’s islands.
