As of October 23, 2026, Taiwan shut down schools and offices, canceled nearly 1,000 flights, and evacuated over 2,600 people ahead of Typhoon Champi, which brought strong winds and heavy rain but was not expected to make landfall. The storm peaked earlier in the week with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph (298 km/h) before weakening as it approached Taiwan’s northeast coast. On October 23, Champi had wind gusts up to 191 km/h (119 mph), causing one fatality and injuring 163 people. Over 70 flights between Hong Kong and Taiwan were also canceled. The storm's forecast predicted it would pass off the northeastern tip of Taiwan and move toward southern Japan without making landfall, though its impact could last nearly two days with up to 90 cm (35 in) of rain.
