As of October 23, 2026, Taiwan shut down schools and offices, cancelled nearly 1,000 flights, and evacuated over 2,600 people ahead of Typhoon Champi. The storm, which peaked at 298 kph (185 mph) earlier in the week, was forecast to bring strong winds and heavy rain but not make direct landfall on Taiwan. As it approached from the southwest, it weakened to around 155 kph (96 mph). While passing near northeastern Taiwan, Champi is expected to hover over waters off China's eastern coast before moving into southern Japan. The storm injured 171 people and caused one fatality due to a wave incident.
