Iranian authorities on Sunday (September 20, 2026) announced the closure of a French language centre associated with the embassy, accusing it of having undertaken "illegal activities", drawing a sharp response from Paris.

"This new attack against France’s cultural presence in Iran, following the assault on two staff members of the French embassy last July, is unjustifiable and unacceptable," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pascal Confavreux said in a statement.
The French Foreign Ministry said it would “take appropriate measures to respond” and would summon Iran’s ambassador in Paris at the request of French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot.
France has previously dismissed such allegations, saying there had been a pattern of intimidation in recent months as Paris sought to increase its support for, and contacts with, Iran's civil society following a crackdown on protests at the start of this year.
The latest dispute was also fuelled by a social media post by French foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot marking the fourth anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini, whose death in custody in 2022 triggered nationwide protests in Iran.
