AEMET, Spain's national weather agency, issued warnings for heavy rain in eastern regions on Wednesday, briefly applying the highest red alert for Barcelona over a threat of flash floods.

Catalan emergency services confirmed they received more than 850 calls related to the downpours, which generated more than 500 incidents.
In the region's capital, also named Valencia, all metro lines were suspended, while flooding shut the city's airport for hours, causing 12 flights to be diverted, according to operator Aena.
Neighbouring Valencia had more than 70mm (2.76in) of rain fall in just half an hour in several municipalities, according to AVAMET.
