The theft of billions of dollars from Binance within a matter of minutes, the biggest cryptocurrency heist in history, was orchestrated by North Korean hackers, the FBI said on Saturday.
What happened
The outlets' own sentences, most widely reported first. Hover or tap one to see who reported it.
Binance, founded in China in 2017, lets users buy, sell and trade digital assets - it is estimated to have hundreds of millions of users worldwide.
At about 0900 GMT Friday, Binance said it was on track to resume withdrawals in 45 hours, after announcing earlier that all deposits and withdrawals had been “temporarily suspended”.
'Binance´s initial investigation suggests that the security incident may involve a compromised DevOps engineer´s laptop, which allowed an attacker to gain access to a service container and submit unauthorized withdrawal transactions,' the company wrote.
Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs separately attributed the attack to North Korea’s state-backed TraderTraitor operation, with high confidence, also citing similarities to earlier heists.
