Polish President Karol Nawrocki turned back from a flight to Senegal on Friday following the suspension of a far-right ally leading the country's highest court, escalating a feud with Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government over control of the judiciary.
What happened
The outlets' own sentences, most widely reported first. Hover or tap one to see who reported it.
Earlier this year, Nawrocki, an ally of Poland's former nationalist government, refused to swear in three of six judges nominated by parliament, while Swieczkowski declined to allow judges elected by the current parliamentary majority to assume their duties.
Earlier on Friday, the Constitutional Tribunal announced that its longest-serving judge, Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, had suspended tribunal president Bogdan Swieczkowski—an appointee of Tusk's far-right predecessor—and had taken charge of the court.
"Restoring the rule of law is our duty," said Tusk, who returned to power in 2023 with a promise to restore the judiciary’s independence.
Minister of Justice Waldemar Zurek told reporters on Friday that he had requested that Swieczkowski and his deputy’s immunity be lifted for failing to fulfil their duties by preventing judges from performing their work.
