PARIS, Oct 9 - Two Renoir paintings worth millions of dollars that were stolen from a museum on the French Riviera a month ago have been recovered and six suspects have been arrested, the local mayor said on Friday.
What happened
The outlets' own sentences, most widely reported first. Hover or tap one to see who reported it.
The suspects cut through a fence to enter the museum's tree-lined grounds at dawn on 8 September, smashed a window to get inside, and used an electric saw to cut through the frame mountings.
The theft conjured up painful memories of the spectacular heist of crown jewels at the Louvre Museum in Paris last year, reviving calls for better security and better funding for the many cultural sites large and small that dot France's landscape.
An alarm sounded, and police officers arrived four minutes later — a swift response that “apparently caused the perpetrators to panic,” Bessone said.
Bessone said the arrests were prompted by the “very strong suspicion that another heist was imminent.”
