Police chiefs are warning that the prisons crisis will lead to a rise in violent crime, as overcrowding causes more criminals to be let back onto the streets.
Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said he was 'flabbergasted' at the growing number of suspects charged with gun and knife crimes who are being released before trial.
Sir Mark said he expected to see a rise in violent crime, with some offenders still being freed on bail on their fourth offence of being caught with a weapon.
It comes as Prime Minister Andy Burnham prepares to let out thousands of criminals as part of the early release scheme by the end of the year."
