Whilst Harald's father and grandfather – the reigning King Haakon VII – held out in Norway as their heroic countrymen battled the German invasion, they too finally fled in June and headed to London with the Norwegian government-in-exile.
In August that year, Harald and his mother and sisters then went to the United States, where they spent the rest of the war, living in Washington."
