"Earlier, Syrian Interior Ministry spokesperson Noureddine al-Baba acknowledged on Monday that there were "shortcomings and deficiencies" in some of the country's police departments, adding that he hopes the incident will "serve as a catalyst for positive change" in its operations.
Accountability 'not enough,' families say
Syrians whose loved ones disappeared or died in detention centres during Assad's rule say they were disturbed to hear of ongoing abuse.
"What happened to [Ghamira] reopens the wounds of torture and death in detention for thousands of Syrian families — practices that Syrians have struggled for years to end, and whose recurrence today cannot be tolerated," Families for Freedom, a group representing relatives of detainees, said in a statement written in Arabic on Monday."
