Missiles and drones struck Kyiv overnight on October 22, 2026, killing one person and injuring 22 others, including four children, hours after U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saint Petersburg. The attacks also damaged homes, transportation infrastructure, and other civilian sites across six districts of the Ukrainian capital. In Kharkiv, a separate wave of Russian attacks killed one person and injured 15 others, including three children. This came after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that talks with Russia to end the war were at their closest point yet. Despite the Kremlin expressing willingness "in principle" to restart trilateral peace negotiations involving Ukraine, the attacks suggest ongoing tensions and military activity continue unabated.
