Roslynn Garner-Gatley, a 76-year-old woman living in Yealmpton, south Devon, has expressed fear over turning on her heating due to a significant increase in domestic oil prices. She relies entirely on oil for heating and hot water since her house lacks a gas supply. Recently, she found that the cost of oil had nearly doubled; six months ago, 500 litres (110 gallons) cost £317 plus VAT, but now it would be £600 plus VAT. As a result, Garner-Gatley has started conserving energy by going to bed earlier and using hot water bottles instead of heating her home extensively. The Devon fund, worth about £8.4m annually, is available for low-income households facing essential costs they cannot afford but may not be sufficient in this rapidly changing economic environment.
