As of October 22, 2026, Barclays announced plans to cut 5,000 jobs, equivalent to about 5% of its global workforce of approximately 93,000 employees as of the end of 2025. This reduction is part of a three-year strategy aimed at boosting performance through cost-cutting and enhancing technology capabilities. The bank had already reduced 1,000 positions in the first half of 2026 and expects to complete the remaining cuts by year-end. Group chief executive CS Venkatakrishnan attributed these changes to investments in artificial intelligence (AI), which have made certain work processes more efficient, allowing for fewer roles such as developers. Barclays reported a pre-tax profit of £2.3 billion for the third quarter of 2026, a 12% increase from the same period in 2025, driven by higher income from its investment bank and wealth management arm despite a decline in fixed-income trading.
