On October 15, 2026, an active shooter incident occurred at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, resulting in the deaths of four people, including three children and one teacher. The shooter, identified as Griffin John, a former student aged 16, was fatally shot by a bystander after entering the school with a pump-action shotgun purchased by his mother. Police directed families to Journey Church at 61303 S. Highway 97, near Goodwill and Dairy Queen, for reunification.
Becky Drury, a critically injured teacher, revealed she pretended to be dead after being shot in order to avoid further harm. The shooter had also entered a special needs classroom before the incident was contained. Authorities are investigating John's online activity, including potential interactions with violent extremist groups and an "obsession with Nazism."
