On October 21, thousands of Greek students, teachers, and civil servants protested in Athens, Thessaloniki, and other cities against high living costs and poor education conditions. The protests echoed similar demonstrations in France over the weekend of October 17-18. In Athens, about 10,000 demonstrators gathered outside parliament, calling for free public education and more state funding for educational facilities. Civil servants also joined with a work stoppage to support the cause. These protests put additional pressure on Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' center-right government ahead of elections in mid-2027, as Greeks continue to grapple with stagnant wages, high rents, and rising energy costs.
