Residents in parts of Toledo, Ohio were instructed to evacuate their homes on Wednesday after a toxic chemical leak was reported. The evacuation order affected individuals within a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) radius of the "hazardous materials release" near Progress Avenue, a commercial and industrial zone in northern Toledo. This directive was issued around 10:48 p.m. Tuesday, while residents in an additional 3-mile (4.8-kilometer) perimeter were instructed to shelter in place. The leak caused a mysterious haze with a strong plastic-like scent that blanketed the city, prompting local schools to close and others to delay opening. Shoreland Elementary School served as a temporary reception center for displaced residents, and buses were deployed at nearby locations like the Meijer parking lot to offer additional shelter. The Toledo Fire & Rescue Department confirmed ongoing efforts to monitor the situation but did not identify a specific chemical involved or report any injuries yet.
