The Ontario Coroner’s office has announced that an inquest into the death of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, a 29-year-old Indigenous-Ukrainian-Black woman, will begin on October 13. Korchinski-Paquet died after falling from her 24-story balcony following an interaction with Toronto police in May 2020, just days after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis intensified national protests and demands for police reform. Her tragic incident became one of several events scrutinizing how police handle mental health crises in Toronto. Despite Ontario’s police watchdog clearing the officers involved of wrongdoing, stating that Paquet was attempting to move from her balcony to an adjacent unit while they were present inside her apartment, the death remains a contentious issue. The 14-day inquest will be conducted over video conference and is expected to provide more detailed insights into the circumstances surrounding Korchinski-Paquet’s fatal fall.
