Work has begun to restore the grandest ancient residence in the Pompeii archaeological site, funded entirely by German entrepreneur Frank Hoefer at a cost of 1.4 million euros (£1.1 million). The house of Marcus Fabius Rufus, buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., has been off-limits to visitors since 1980 but is expected to open to guided tours by Christmas this year. Hoefer contacted the Archaeological Park after reading superintendent Gabriel Zuchtriegel’s book "Pompeii: The Enchanted City." While the renovation marks a significant restoration milestone, park officials note that it does not immediately eliminate entrance fees for visitors but represents progress towards future accessibility improvements.
