Helen Haines, a 65-year-old independent member of the Australian parliament representing Indi, remains in critical condition after being struck by a car outside her office in Wangaratta on Monday afternoon. The incident, which occurred around 3:30 PM local time, left Haines with severe lower body injuries that resulted in both legs being amputated. Police arrested the suspect, identified as a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee, at the scene after finding a flick knife in his pocket.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Victorian Premier Ben Carroll condemned the attack as potentially deliberate political violence, expressing concern about rising tensions in Australian politics. Haines was hit by a white Land Rover, though some reports also mention a Toyota Land Cruiser. A local barber attempted to help and restrained the driver before police arrived.
Community leaders, including former MP Cathy McGowan, rallied support for Haines at a vigil in Wodonga, emphasizing the need to strengthen democracy rather than allow violence to dominate public discourse.
