The head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, stated on October 20, 2026, that there is little chance of oil market conditions returning to normal in 2027. This follows U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran last February, which triggered a war leading to significant disruptions in the Gulf region's oil supply. The conflict has pushed oil prices above $100 per barrel compared to below $70 before hostilities began. In response, the IEA has released up to 400 million barrels from strategic reserves to stabilize markets. Iran's threats to control tanker shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have also increased insurance costs for maritime transport. Birol warned that any additional crises in West Asia could prompt further releases from strategic oil reserves.
