As of October 20, 2026, the BBC announced plans to close its BBC Three and BBC Scotland television channels on linear TV by spring 2027 as part of cost-cutting measures aimed at saving £500 million over two years. Both services will transition exclusively to online platforms like BBC iPlayer. Additionally, Radio 4 Extra is set to cease traditional broadcasting. The move follows previous closures and reintroductions of BBC Three in 2016 and 2022 respectively. Around 10 jobs will be lost in Scotland due to these changes. Director-General Matt Brittin acknowledged the tough choices needed but emphasized that much content would still be available on iPlayer and Sounds. Scottish officials, including SNP MSP Alex Kerr and Green culture spokesperson Q Manivannan, criticized the decision as a blow to Scottish broadcasting and cultural representation.
