On October 19, Helen Haines, a 65-year-old independent Australian lawmaker for Indi in Victoria state, was critically injured when she was hit by a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV outside her office in Wangaratta. The driver, identified as Brendan Nugent (43), from Tarrawingee, was arrested at the scene after allegedly striking Haines multiple times with his vehicle. Police found a knife inside the car and are investigating whether it was an intentional act; Nugent has since been charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and harming a Commonwealth public official.
Haines remains in critical but stable condition at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne after losing one leg and undergoing emergency surgery to save her second leg. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed concern over the incident and confirmed that an ongoing major police investigation is underway. The attack has sparked widespread condemnation across political lines, highlighting concerns about rising political violence in Australia.
