On October 19, Gabriel Sanchez-Ortega, a bass-baritone singer with the Calgary Opera, was removed from future performances of "Tosca" after displaying a Palestinian flag during the opening-night curtain call in Calgary. The opera company stated that Sanchez-Ortega's actions were "unexpected and unauthorized," violating company policy on political protest within their artistic context. Despite being replaced for the remaining shows, Sanchez-Ortega claimed on Instagram that he had "no regret" over his actions and alleged financial threats against the Calgary Opera due to his removal. The opera house maintained its commitment to fostering a welcoming and respectful environment for all involved in the performances.
