Will Liam Lawson get the Racing Bulls seat for next year?

Racing Bulls are one of only two teams where the 2027 driver line-up is not finalised.
asserted
up → finalise → teams
The other is Haas, where Oliver Bearman has not yet been confirmed alongside new signing Rafael Camara, although that is only a matter of time.
asserted
that → confirm → time
At Racing Bulls, it's a three-don't-fit-into-two situation, with current race drivers Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad in the frame along with Red Bull junior driver Nikola Tsolov, the Bulgarian who is second in the Formula 2 championship at the moment.
asserted
who → fit → moment
This is the first time in Red Bull history that Helmut Marko is not in charge of driver choice at the junior team and it's unclear what approach they will take under the new management.
uncertain
they → take → management
In the past, one might have expected them to drop Lawson, on the basis that he has had his chance and is not likely to be considered a long-term candidate for a full-time seat at Red Bull, and put Tsolov in alongside Lindblad.
uncertain
he → expect → Lindblad
But there is an argument that the Red Bull young driver programme has been mismanaged for 20 years by Marko and former team boss Christian Horner and they should take a more considered, patient, methodological approach.
asserted
they → be → approach
In the past, Marko and Horner took a very ruthless approach.
asserted
Marko → take → approach
A driver would get a shot, and if they did not deliver pretty much immediately, they were dropped.
asserted
they → get → shot
On one level, it made sense - they were looking for world-class drivers who could lead Red Bull.
uncertain
who → make → Bull
And if a driver was not that level, they felt they had no use for them.
asserted
they → feel → them
But at the same time, it sometimes meant putting two unknown quantities together, which made it harder to judge the quality of either.
asserted
it → mean → either
An alternative approach might be to keep a known-quality benchmark on board against which it is easier to judge the ability of a newcomer.
uncertain
it → keep → newcomer
On that basis, it would make sense to keep Lawson and Lindblad together for 2027 and make Tsolov the reserve, put him in the simulator and give him some tests in older cars to provide him with F1 experience.
asserted
Tsolov → make → experience
So if Lindblad is to be considered a future candidate for Red Bull, this argument would go, he should be given an extra season to prove whether he can consistently beat Lawson.
asserted
he → consider → Lawson
If they put Tsolov in with Lindblad, they have two unknown quantities, which helps no-one in the bigger picture.
asserted
which → put → picture
A decision has not yet been taken, and ultimately it rests with the shareholders, Chalerm Yoovidhya and Mark Mateschitz, with under them Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff, who is in overall charge of the F1 programme.

Why is F1 going to another country, Rwanda, with what can only be described as very poor human rights?

Is this another case of if you have the cash we'll come to your country irrespective of significant international concern regarding the suppression of political dissent, press freedom and the country's military involvement in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo?

Formula 1's owner Liberty Media has been looking to establish a race in Africa since it took over the sport in 2017.

It was the one glaring omission from the calendar, and the race in Rwanda will give F1 a presence on every single inhabited continent, as well as access to a largely untapped market.

Many - if not most - grands prix are funded by governments in one way or another, so it's hardly a surprise that the one African bid to come to fruition has government backing.
asserted
bid → fund → backing
It's a sensitive situation because Rwanda receives international aid, and the government and F1 have been keen to emphasise that the funding is coming from a newly established development fund combining public and private investment.

Then there are the accusations of 'sportswashing' - a term given to the use of major sports events to distract from aspects of the country's conduct that parts of the wider international community find problematic.

DRC's Minister of Foreign Affairs Therese Kayikwamba Wagner issued a statement last week to say that while DR Congo supported the idea of a grand prix in Africa, they were opposed to Rwanda being its host.
asserted
Rwanda → issue → Africa
She accused Rwanda President Paul Kagame of "fuelling a devastating war in our country", adding that wars in the DRC have claimed millions of lives, that people continue to be driven from their homes and Congolese natural resources exploited and appropriated.
asserted
resources → accuse → homes
The statement also pointed out that the US has imposed sanctions on Rwanda's military and senior officials because of their involvement in supporting the M23 rebel group in the DRC, undermining a peace agreement.
asserted
US → point → agreement
Kayikwamba Wagner added: "This is also an opportunity for F1 to show its audiences and supporters what the sport truly stands for.
asserted
sport → add → what
It should require credible, independent guarantees that no money used to host the race comes from conflict-linked minerals or the exploitation of Congolese resources."

An F1 spokesperson said: "We have a long track record of delivering significant economic, social and cultural value to our host nations.
