On October 15, 2026, an active shooter report at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, resulted in the deaths of four people, including three children ages 5, 8, and 11, and a teacher. The gunman, identified as Griffin J. John II, aged 16, used a Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun he received as a birthday gift from his mother Shauntai Nickerson. Police arrived promptly after receiving a 911 call made by the driver of a passing pickup truck who was shot at by the suspect. Authorities confirmed that the shooter died during the incident.
The Bend Police Department directed students' families to Journey Church at 61303 S. Highway 97 for reunification, while evacuating the school room-by-room. Law enforcement reported finding five students and four teachers in a special needs classroom, with two additional individuals uninjured but possibly traumatized from running or hiding.
Parents of one victim, Rhoam Summer (5 years old), hired three law firms to investigate if the tragedy could have been prevented. The incident sparked debate on school safety measures and gun control laws like S.B. 243 in Oregon.
