Saudi Arabia executed two Bangladeshi nationals, a man and a woman, in the holy city of Mecca for committing "indecent acts" inside a mosque, according to the Saudi interior ministry on October 19, 2026. Bangladesh was not informed about these executions until after they occurred. The executed individuals were convicted under Islamic law's tazir category, which allows judges discretion in sentencing severe offenses. More than three million Bangladeshi workers live and work in Saudi Arabia, mostly in low-paying jobs; thus, the execution has sparked public concern in Bangladesh. In response to the incident, Bangladesh has reached out to the Saudi government for more details about the case.
