On Saturday night, U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany, a Republican congressman from Wisconsin who is running for governor, had to swim to safety after the small plane he was traveling in made an emergency landing on Lake Wausau near the Wausau Downtown Airport. The incident occurred as Tiffany was returning home from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner. After losing power upon approach to the airport, the pilot initiated a water landing; once the aircraft began to submerge, both Tiffany and the pilot exited and swam to shallow waters where they awaited rescue. Emergency responders transported them to Aspirus Wausau Hospital, where they received treatment for minor injuries. The Federal Aviation Administration stated that it would investigate the crash of a Beechcraft K35 with two people aboard.
