Sam Coutts, an 18-year-old autistic teenager from Darlington, took his own life at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College in January after a meeting with the vice principal about social media posts he had made regarding his support worker. Sam was studying A-levels and hoped to attend York St John University. He felt isolated and was assigned support worker Lauren Crosby. After she discovered posts on Reddit where Sam talked about her, including an email linking to Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You," a meeting was scheduled for January 13 during which he was informed his support would be reassigned. Before this meeting, Sam confided in his mother that he felt embarrassed and ashamed. The cause of death has not been released but the inquest heard that these events led directly to his tragic end.
