On October 19, 2026, Myanmar authorities allowed King Charles III of the United Kingdom to send a package to detained Aung San Suu Kyi, who was deposed during the military coup in 2021. The package included two books about soil, one sealed envelope, and a diplomatic communication from King Charles. This marks the first time Myanmar's government referred to Suu Kyi as a "special female detainee" since her arrest. Since the coup, an ongoing civil war has resulted in over 100,000 deaths, according to conflict monitoring group ACLED. Suu Kyi, a Nobel laureate and former political leader, was moved to house arrest after elections excluded her party following the installation of junta chief Min Aung Hlaing as civilian president in April 2026.
The coup leader and former junta chief Min Aung Hlaing was installed as civilian president in April following elections that did not include Ms. Suu Kyi's party, and she was moved to house arrest soon afterwards.
