As of October 19, 2026, the U.S. Coast Guard has ended its search for 11 missing people after rescuing 16 survivors, several of whom were treated for suspected shark bites, off Mexico's Baja California coast. The incident occurred when a boat capsized around 140 miles west of Ensenada, Mexico, on October 16, with 27 people originally onboard.
A mayday call was transmitted from the distressed vessel at approximately 1:00 AM local time, and a helicopter arrived two hours later to initiate rescues. The Coast Guard conducted the search over nearly four days but concluded it without locating any further survivors.
Survivors reported being in the water for an extended period before rescue teams could reach them. Three individuals specifically received medical treatment for shark bite injuries.
The boat's route and intended destination remain unclear, though officials suspect smuggling activities given the location known for such operations. The U.S. Coast Guard worked closely with Mexican naval forces throughout the search operation. Captain Joseph Meuse of the Coast Guard Southwest District praised the collaboration, stating: "We are grateful for the exceptional coordination and assistance from Mexico and the U.S. Navy throughout this challenging operation."
