Queen's Hospital, a struggling east London facility originally built in 2006 to handle 325 patients daily, has secured £42 million in funding to rebuild its Accident & Emergency (A&E) department. The hospital currently treats more than twice the number of patients it was designed for. Ms Wheeler, the hospital's leader, stated that the new facility will create conditions for staff to "deliver the best possible care." The current A&E lacks a waiting area and has overcrowding issues; the redesign includes dedicated waiting areas, improved layouts for monitoring patients, and more natural light. Additionally, the children’s A&E department will also be revamped using the same funding.
The department has no waiting area, the rapid assessment and focused treatment emergency department is used “inappropriately” due to overcrowding, and people have to walk 335 steps from the Queen’s entrance to the adult A&E.
