On October 18, 2026, a major fire erupted at CFB Wainwright in Alberta during a live-fire training exercise. The blaze spread rapidly due to high winds and affected both military personnel and surrounding areas. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Premier Danielle Smith expressed condolences, emphasizing the safety of those involved as top priority.
As of October 19, 2026, four military members were confirmed dead: Sgt. Morgan Wong, Pte. Shaun Farrell, Pte. Aida Goulding, and Pte. Hayden Lykkemark. Dozens more were injured. The fire began near the base during training exercises when a nearby grass fire was whipped by strong winds, causing it to spread quickly towards soldiers.
The Department of National Defence stated they would provide additional information as details emerged. Flags at CFB Winnipeg and federal buildings in Alberta were lowered to half-mast in honor of those affected. Premier Wab Kinew from Manitoba offered support, stating that "Manitoba stands ready to help in any way we can."
