Saudi Arabia is set to decide as soon as Monday whether to postpone its flagship investment conference, the Future Investment Initiative (FII), scheduled to begin next week in Riyadh. Wall Street executives, including the boss of Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund Yasir Al-Rumayyan, have privately expressed safety concerns about attending the event in person. The decision ultimately rests with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. PIF, which backs FII and is the majority shareholder of its organizing firm, is expected to make a call today. Rooms at the Ritz Carlton in Riyadh, usually reserved for the conference, are currently available for public booking, suggesting potential postponement.
Delaying the conference when the main gateway to the city is under attack wouldn’t be surprising, but it runs counter to Riyadh’s narrative that the metastasizing war in the region isn’t disrupting business.
The kingdom, and its neighbors like the UAE and Qatar, have pitched themselves as not just sources of capital, but as a safe home for trillions in financial assets, data centers, and new industries.
