As of October 19, 2026, health workers at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in London began a three-day strike over "poverty-level" wages and poor working conditions. The union Unite claims that management has not addressed issues such as racist behavior, bullying, inadequate safety equipment, and insufficient welfare facilities like showers or changing rooms. Unite general secretary Sharon Graham stated that the workers, including cleaners, porters, store operatives, and food service assistants, are integral to the hospital’s operation but cannot afford to live on their current wages in London. The Trust maintains ongoing negotiations with staff, noting that pay levels are determined by the wider NHS, not by the trust itself. Further strikes are planned for later this autumn if management fails to return to the negotiating table.
