As of October 18, 2026, the BBC has paused its civil service secondment scheme for government statisticians working at its fact-checking service, BBC Verify. Since 2018, the corporation had been offering six-month opportunities to up to two civil servant statisticians each year to work under the head of statistics for BBC News. This pause comes after a report in The Telegraph alleged that embedded civil servants were engaging in editorial tasks, raising concerns about breaches of impartiality rules.
A BBC spokesperson stated that all journalism and editorial decisions are made by BBC journalists and editors following the corporation's guidelines, ensuring statisticians do not make editorial decisions. Those currently on secondment will be excluded from news or content publication during this review period. The recruitment round for new secondments has been paused to reassess the role.
The decision reflects the BBC’s commitment to maintaining independence and transparency. While statisticians' work is sometimes acknowledged with their names on the BBC website, they have never made editorial decisions according to the spokesperson.
