On October 18, Ukraine launched a massive drone attack on St Petersburg, Russia, targeting oil facilities and data centers with over 1,000 drones in one of its largest aerial bombardments. The attack killed at least one person and injured five others according to Alexander Beglov, the city's governor. Fires broke out at the St Petersburg Oil Terminal and Ruchi oil depot, while an Ozon logistics hub and a VK data center were also hit. Russian air defenses reportedly shot down 1,015 Ukrainian drones over 15 regions including Crimea and parts of Ukraine under Russian control. This attack follows President Donald Trump's decision to waive sanctions against Russia and 'slow down' satellites, leading to increased tensions between the US and Ukraine.
Ukraine confirmed Thursday it had resumed attacks on Russian oil after a three-day hiatus.
Zelenskyy was outraged by Russia’s continuing aerial bombardment of his country’s energy infrastructure in apparent defiance of Trump’s demand on Sunday for both sides to halt those attacks.
