The leaders of Sri Lanka’s Tamil parties met with Indian Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday, April 19, 2026, in Colombo, to urge sustained Indian engagement and full implementation of the Indo-Lanka Accord of 1987. The accord was signed during the civil war between Sri Lankan government forces and Tamil separatists to address Tamils' aspirations for equal rights and greater political power. General Secretary of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) M.A. Sumanthiran highlighted that despite the 1987 treaty, which was never fully realized even through subsequent reforms like the 13th Amendment, there is a need for an arrangement based on a federal model with irrevocable power sharing between Sri Lanka and its Tamil regions.
Sri Lanka’s Tamil parties have sought sustained Indian engagement to ensure the implementation of the Indo-Lanka Accord of 1987, signed during the early years of the civil war to address the aspirations of Tamils for equal rights and greater political power.
