Comedian Celeste Barber is set to return to theatre for the first time in 20 years in "kooky" comedy play The Book of Liz.

It's a full-circle moment for Barber, who worked at the theatre's restaurant back in 2003, the year after she finished drama school.

She recalls her then-roommate landing a role alongside Hugo Weaving in Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing that year.

"I was cleaning cutlery at the end of the shift and looking down the corridor at them in the green room together running lines," she says.
"I remember thinking, as I scrubbed crusty pasta off a fork, 'One day that will be me'.

Premiering Off-Broadway in 2001, The Book of Liz is a play by American siblings Amy and David Sedaris — Amy best known for Bojack Horseman and surreal sketch show At Home with Amy Sedaris, and David for his comic essays.

Barber will play the relentlessly positive Sister Elizabeth Donderstock, who decides to leave her cloistered community after she's forced to give up her treasured cheese ball recipe.

It was the opportunity to work on a play by the Sedaris siblings, who write together as "The Talent Family", that lured Barber back to the stage.

Stepping away from theatre for 20 years wasn't deliberate, the comedian adds, but a "pivot" because she "couldn't book a job or even get an audition".

To play Liz, Barber plans to draw on the skills in character comedy she's finessed over more than a decade as a stand-up, but is most excited by the chance to work collaboratively.

The Book of Liz is one of 13 plays in STC's 2027 season, which also includes a Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries play, and an adaptation of Jenny Hocking's The Palace Letters, starring Georgie Parker (Dalliance), about efforts to unseal papers about Gough Whitlam's dismissal in 1975.

A theatre for actors
Cast size isn't the only thing determining the scale of a production: The now-international "cine-theatre" hit The Picture of Dorian Gray will return to Australia, with Nikki Shiels (Colin from Accounts) playing all 26 characters.
It's not Shiels's first time in the role, having been the alternate performer, or understudy, for the Australian tour since 2022.
