On October 17, 2026, tens of thousands of protesters across France took to the streets in a nationwide movement against high prices, social inequalities, and the deteriorating education system. The protests initially began at high schools in Paris' northern suburbs over teacher shortages and poor facilities but quickly spread nationwide. By October 18, the demonstrations turned violent, with masked rioters setting fire to the historic Limoges Town Hall, built in 1883 and a protected heritage site since 1975. The building was largely destroyed as authorities estimated nearly 200,000 protesters nationwide, including 40,000 in Paris. President Emmanuel Macron called for calm, stating there is no place for violence in the republic.
