Pakistan's federal government imposed emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), displacing the provincial government led by imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. The move followed weeks of political tensions, including PTI announcing a long march to Islamabad demanding Khan’s release and better access for him in prison.
The federal cabinet recommended the emergency rule on October 11, 2026, based on allegations that the PTI-led government had a "nexus" with terrorist groups and was deliberately disengaged from counterterrorism efforts. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's government cited rising militant violence as justification for the intervention.
Parliament endorsed the decision during joint sessions of the National Assembly and Senate, despite opposition protests carrying slogans against the emergency. The federal government has taken swift actions following the proclamation, including preventive custody of senior officials and reshuffling Civil Service appointments to support the governor’s new responsibilities under the emergency rule.
The PTI continues to protest the move, maintaining it is being left out of security decisions regarding KP. Meanwhile, the Centre asserts that national security must take precedence over political considerations. The federal government claims to have consulted extensively with opposition leaders but reached a dead end in negotiations before imposing the emergency rule.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday reiterated that the Centre was “compelled” to impose emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to the provincial government’s lack of cooperation in countering terrorism.
The Centre imposed emergency and governor’s rule in KP on Oct 11, citing the provincial government’s “deliberate disengagement” from the fight against terrorism.
